Regulations

The National Building Code (NBC) regulation stipulates that all public and commercial buildings across Canada install fire alarm systems. Thereafter, The National Fire Code (NFC) regulates maintenance and inspection. Annual inspection of fire alarms is mandatory and shall be conducted by a certified business that received proper training.

Codes continue to evolve over time and building owners must ensure that their building is compliant with the applicable standards, depending on its year of construction or alteration.

You should take notice of the following:

Take further note that your municipality could enact more stringent standards for the buildings located on its territory.
We advise getting informed in this regard with the planning authorities before you undertake construction or alteration
Preserve documents that attest of an annual inspection and testing of fire alarms, so that authorities can consult them (CAN-ULC-S536 and S537)
In 2013, the RBQ adopted a new regulation. Under this code buildings built before November 7, 2000, shall comply with requirements of the National Building Code 1995 modified Québec;
